How to Replace Garage-Door Rollers

A stuck or poorly opening garage door is sometimes the result of busted out rollers. The rollers are the small wheels that fit into the track, allowing the door to lift and lower smoothly. Sometimes the door outlives the rollers, which means you will need to replace them. The following guide can help.

Safety first

It’s vital that you take a few safety steps before you begin to work. You must have the door open to replace the rollers, but you don’t want to take a chance that the door comes crashing down. To prevent this, place a heavy-duty clamp on the track on each side of the door. This way, if the door does move downward, the clamps will effectively catch it.

Next, make sure the automatic opener, if equipped, is unplugged and that the release cord is pulled so the garage door is in manual mode.

Removal technique

The technique is relatively simple. Begin by bending the track open slightly at the seam near the top of the garage-door opening. You can use pliers to help you bend the track. Repeat for each side of the track.

Next, roll the door to the bent track. Use a screwdriver to help pry the roller out of the track at the bent location. This will allow you to slip the old roller out of its channel in the garage door so you can slip a new roller in. Then, you can push the roller back into the track, roll the door down so the next roller is lined up, and repeat the process.

You will need to do the same thing for each roller. Depending on your door style, there may be one roller on each side that doesn’t line up with your bend in the track. In this case, you will need to bend open the track at an overhead location near this roller so you can slip it out and replace it.

Finishing tips

Once you are done, you will need to bend the track back into shape. It helps at this point to add a small amount of garage-door lubricant to each roller so they move smoothly in the track. Reattach the automatic opener, and open and close the door a few times. The door should move smoothly with no squealing. If it seems to hitch slightly, the track may have been knocked out of alignment as you worked. Fortunately, you can easily fix this by loosening the bolts holding the track in place and nudging it gently so it is better aligned before you tighten the bolts.

5 Steps Needed To Build A Metal Building For Your Storage Or Manufacturing Needs

Metal buildings are useful to create extra storage and/or manufacturing space at an industrial complex. They can be built in a fraction of the time of a brick and mortar building, and can last for years with proper care. Here is a brief outline on the 5 steps a metal building contractor needs to do to erect a structure for you within a couple of weeks.

Step One: Foundation Work

A large concrete pad has to be laid down and cured before the metal building can be erected. The concrete is poured to match the width and length of the building that will be built. Stud bolts will be placed in the concrete at specific spots along the edges of the pad.

The curing time for concrete before the concrete can begin installing the framework takes at least 7 days after the concrete is poured.

Step Two: Build Frame

Many contractors use construction telescopic forklifts to move the steel beams and set them in place. The first parts to be installed are the metal stud beams. The bottom of the stud is carefully placed over the stud bolts and dropped down into place. Nuts will be placed on the bolts, but won’t be completely tightened down until the rest of the frame work is together.

Metal beams are placed on top of the studs. These beams will be bolted together over the middle of the pad to form the joists for the roof. Once a section is complete, all the nuts will be tightened to secure the studs and beams in place.

Step Three: Build Walls

Cross beams are placed along the studs and the roof beams. Aluminum panels are screwed to the cross beams to form the exterior walls and roof. Framing for the doors and windows are also erected in the sides of building. The doors and windows will be installed at designated locations.

Office space will be framed out and walls will be built to enclose the office from the rest of the building to keep it secure.

Step Four: Install Utilities

The electric and gas lines will be connected to the building. The lines will be placed where needed throughout the building. Lighting will be installed along the ceiling to light up the new facility.

Step Five: Move in Equipment

The last part that needs to be done before you start using the building is to move in the equipment you are going to use for storage or manufacturing.

Old House With High Heating Bills? What To Do

Does the old construction of your home make it difficult to heat the house as you would like, and instead you end up with draughts and high heating bills? If so, you can put an end to these problems in a variety of ways while improving the house.

You’ll want to see how the air is getting moved around the house, prevent air from escaping through the exterior walls, and get the furnace checked out. Here are a few things to have done right away.

Duct Sealing

Duct sealing is when the HVAC contractors wrap tape around the cracks and joining components of the ducts to prevent air loss. They will also check for damages around the ducts that are causing air loss. Up to 30 percent of the air your furnace is working to produce could be getting lost before it gets to the main areas in the home, preventing your house from heating the way you want it to. Duct sealing can prevent this. This will also help with air conditioning expenses.

New Insulation

New insulation composed of polyurethane foam will stop the drafts from coming through the house, will help keep heat inside, and will prevent moisture accumulation throughout the exterior walls. This type of insulation is blown with a tube by experts throughout the walls and it expands to fill all the cracks and areas around windows and doors. You should also see if you need new insulation under the base of the roof to prevent air loss out of the top of the house. This will also keep insects and other pests from getting into the house from outside.

Furnace Inspection

Have the furnace inspected to make sure that it is producing air warm enough to get your house comfortable and to make sure that it’s working as efficiently as it should be. Investing the money to replace the furnace with a new efficient option may be the most ideal if your furnace is wasting energy every month. The gas lines should also be checked at this time.

If you don’t have the funds to replace all the windows throughout the house, or to replace all of the siding, these are alternative options that are affordable and can cut your heating costs right away. Don’t just keep paying high heating bills every month because you think it’s the only thing you can do, and, instead, make changes to save.

New Welding Techniques To Change The Way You Work With Automobiles

Many new forms of metals are being formed every day. However, these metals are often compromised by current welding techniques. By harnessing different techniques you will be able to utilize the unique structures of these metals and yield better, stronger automobile structures.

The Role Of Resistance Spot Welding

Resistance spot welding is a technique that many welders use. However, this technique works by charging pieces of metal with high electrical current. This electrical current is what welds the two pieces together. However, the high electrical current can also significantly alter the properties of the metals used, and can make newly developed metals less effective.

Laser Screw Welding

Laser screw welding is a new technique to the automobile manufacturing industry. This technique utilizes lasers to preform precise spot welds that minimize the use of welding material. This welding technique happens on a smaller scale, which means alternative metals are much less likely to become distorted. The only drawback to using this technique is so far only like metals can be bonded together. This means only aluminum could be bonded to aluminum, or steel could only be bonded to steel. The main advantage to using this technique is the speed and precision available.

Vaporized Foil Actuator Welding

Vaporized foil actuator welding, or VFA, is a new technique that seeks to move beyond the hindrances of resistance spot welding. Vaporized foil actuator welding works by using a high capacitor voltage system and aluminum foil. When used, the voltage system pulses a very high amount of electrical current into the foil. The aluminum foil is vaporized and hot gas fuses the two pieces of metal together. This results in a stronger welding process than what was previously available.

Due to the metals not being melted, as in resistance spot welding, the microstructures of alternative metals are preserved. This allows much greater utility in using alternative metals in automobiles. Lighter, stronger metals can be used to fabricate new car parts, or entire frames for better automobile creation and repair. This technique also improves upon the laser screw welding process because it can bond metals that were previously difficult to bond together.

VFA can also allow the metals to be shaped at the same time the welds are applied, which can save steps in the fabrication process. This makes the fabrication process faster and more cost effective. By using this process, you get vehicles and parts that are stronger by using the best available technologies.

Four Reasons You Should Only Buy Pressure Tanks From Manufacturers With Certification

“Industry standards” may sound like something you don’t need to worry about unless you work in a particular industry, but the industry standards for your pressure tanks play a very important role in your workplace safety. Here are four reasons to respect companies who take the time to get proper certification and make sure your pressure vessel supplier is among them.

1. Manufacturing specifications

The code that manufacturers must follow to acquire certification is a tried and true set of rules honed over many years of use. This means that tanks made according to these specifications will be more reliable than those made by non-compliant manufacturers, who may have a great innovative manufacturing method or may not. For those who don’t want to chance exploding pressure tanks, a certified manufacturer is the obvious best choice.

2. Public awareness (namely yours)

The growing health food craze in recent years has prompted even innocent bystanders to curiously glance at the nutrition facts on their meal. If you’ve ever seen ingredients in your food that surprised and shocked you, you know how important it is to know where something comes from, especially when it has a high level of influence on your daily life, like a pressure tank can. Knowing that your pressure tank manufacturer adheres to an international code can not only reassure you of the quality of the manufacturing process as mentioned above, but also:

  • educate you about what exactly is allowed in the process
  • demystify the manufacturing process
  • standardize tank maintenance requirements

3. Quality control

Standardizing manufacturing processes is an attempt to standardize quality, meaning that you can be sure certified manufacturers aren’t slacking on quality control. If they did, they could be caught out by an examination. They have to agree to these inspections in order to become certified, so they have no way to hide their quality control practices from the public.

4. Insurance considerations

Insurance companies know and trust international manufacturing codes, meaning that they’re more likely to grant your claim if you should ever need to enter one for a properly stamped vessel from a certified manufacturer. You can have no such certainty with a vessel from an uncertified manufacturer, meaning that it could actually lose you money in an insurance claim.

These four points demonstrate just a few of the ways in which a properly certified manufacturer is the best choice for all your pressure tank needs. Next time you’re shopping for a pressure tank, be sure to verify manufacturer certification before buying.

Battling Worksite Dehydration: 4 Reasons Water Delivery Service May Be Beneficial

When you work a strenuous job that keeps you busy, it can become easy to forget about hydration. This can be dangerous, since about two-thirds of your body is made up of water. It is for this reason that keeping the people at your job site properly hydrated should be a main priority. To learn just how important frequent water breaks are and how helpful they can be to your work site, read the points below. From there, you should reach out to a service in your area that can assist you further.

Dehydration Causes Chronic Fatigue

When workers are fatigued, they are much less productive and much more likely to suffer injury on the job. This can create serious setbacks and liabilities to your company. Did you know that one of the biggest causes of fatigue is dehydration? Even mild dehydration can create fatigue that makes it difficult to complete a work day. In fact, experts say dehydration is the main reason people feel midday fatigue. Put away the coffee and instead stock up on plenty of water through a water delivery service to keep your workers hydrated.

Dehydration Causes the Brain to Shut Down

When you lack water, your brain does not function. This is medically proven, as dehydration allows your brain to begin shrinkage, even during bouts of slight dehydration. This has an immediate impact on not only your thinking skills, but your ability to concentrate and even your ability to maintain full body coordination. This can have debilitating circumstances in a job that requires plenty of physical attention to detail.

Dehydration Can Trigger Allergies

If you have workers that suffer from allergies, dehydration may also be a cause. Studies show that the lack of hydration increases histamine levels, which inflames the respiratory system and triggers asthma and allergies. To make sure your crew is able to stay healthy and on the job, keep them hydrated—especially during spring allergy season.

Dehydration Does Not Allow You to Get Full Muscle Use

When your fluids are balance, you will get greater production out of your muscles. People who work manual labor sites such as oil fields will need all of the muscle power that they can get, which is why drinking 17 ounces of water before beginning heavy labor is ideal. From here, you should stress that workers maintain their hydration since they will be losing plenty of fluid due to sweat.

Can Your Damaged Windshield Be Repaired, Or Does It Need to Be Replaced?

When the glass in your vehicle’s windows and doors has become damaged, it is obviously crucial to repair it as soon as possible. However, it is important to note that even if the location and severity of the damage will not necessarily limit the repairs, the glass could still be challenging or impossible to repair for other reasons.

Therefore, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the various scenarios before making a final decision about replacing or repairing the glass.

Situations That Will Always Prevent Repair

If the damage in your windshield is immediately in front of you and could make seeing through the glass difficult, it is probably not safe to repair. If it is very near the outer edges of the glass, you should also plan for a replacement. Unfortunately, even smaller chips and cracks that could be an easy fix elsewhere in the glass cannot typically be repaired if they are near the outside of the glass.

Other examples of glass that cannot be repaired include

  • Multi-layered damage ( that is on both the inside and outside of the glass)
  • Multiple cracks that cover a large area
  • Long cracks, even if they are not very deep
  • Deep cracks, even if they are not very long
  • Cracks that manifest on the inside of the windshield

Situations That Allow An Easy Glass Repair

Removing the glass from your windshield is often a time-consuming and expensive project that needs to be done by an experienced professional. There are known risks associated with replacing windshields.

One common problem for new windshields include water, snow, ice or sleet leaking into the car because of one or more tiny air holes was not properly sealed when the new glass was installed. Another issue is incomplete bonding, which can occur when the adhesive used to secure the windshield to the car is not fully dried when it is driven away.

If you have any of the following problems, you will probably be able to avoid replacing the entire windshield:

  • Dings
  • Breaks that are linear or star-shaped
  • Smaller chips and cracks that are less than about 18 inches
  • Portions that have round or oval-shaped cracks

In conclusion, if you only have small areas of the windshield that have been damaged and those areas do not prevent you from being able to safely drive, you will probably be able to have it repaired. Larger, more complex areas of damage or if the damage is too close to the edges of your windshield will usually mean that a new windshield will be in your future. If you are still unsure, consult with a glass repair technician for recommendations, such as one from Economy Glass in Calgary.
